Tornado trevor
Last night I thought my very last moment on this earth had come. The scenario I had time to stage before me included scenes that my imagination shouldn't be able to form. The thunderstorm didn't exactly undermine the feeling of mortal fear that came upon me.
I have never experienced a thunderstorm like that in my soon to be 27 years. The lightning illuminated the whole Laganas bay and suddenly the sky didn't turn only blue and white but green and orange. The next moment, a sound I couldn't identify sneaked upon us, as we lie in bed, growing stronger and stronger..fsssssss it sounded..fssssssss.
I glanced at Nik, he was half hidden under the blanket, shit scared just like me. The sound grew stronger and the house suddenly shook, lights went out and on again, computer screens started flashing. the war of the ants took over the TV screen. The earthquake marking the end of the world...
I suddenly remembered all those b-listed American destruction movies.. Will Smiths terrified face came before me..Armageddon, the end of days..Was this how my life would end? I suddenly remembered the prophecy about the big earthquake that was supposed to hit end of summer, maybe it was delayed three months or so?
And then, as suddenly as it had approached and made us twist in out sheets, the ear piercing sound stopped.
No tsunami, no sudden collapse of the earths crust, no end of the world.
I let my breath out, looked at Nik; WTF was that? He looked just as clueless as I felt. Got up, looked out and saw nothing but complete darkness.
When logic came back to us. We agreed that it had been a natural phenomenon becoming more and more re-occurrent in these parts. A twister, tornado. A Strong twirling uncontrolled wind. There was no other explanation. The sound, lack of water. The house was still standing even if I wondered how it was possible.
In the morning we saw the result of our nightly scare.
The tornado ,had decided to miraculously spare every inch of Niks land area and ironically rounded the land line and like a giant tongue, scraping the bottom of a bowl, it had licked the neighbor's olive grove clear of trees, chicken farms and Spartanian constructed animal shelters.
First thing in the morning, like a true villager, I went for a walk downtown to see what else the tongue had lapped. The Main road in Kalamaki looked even more like an invaded and then abandonded ghost town than before. The differences where the twisted roadsigns, the broken cement pillars, bended streetlights and the missing rooftops, and the fact that it looked as if someone had emptied all the dumpsters of the island on the main strip in Kalamaki. Surreal. But very real indeed.
Guess what was the subject of discussion in the houses and streets today? And guess how greatly exaggerated the story becomes every time we tell it to someone. (Keep in mind this might be the 7th time I tell it today)..but still..freaky as hell. Lucky our house was spared when others weren't. And even more lucky that internet was working today so that I still could participate in my important web meeting..
